Christmas is in the Air

It's that time of year that we all love. Not too long ago I asked the twins what color they liked best because I wanted to do twin Christmas Collections this year. Like I didn't already know the answer. LOL Lilly said I want Pink and Wesley said Blue! So this year there will be 2 Christmas Collections, One Pink inspired and one Blue.

Each collection will be very much alike with a few differences like the twins themselves. This week, Lilly's Collection is in the store, with Wesley's soon to follow. See the new digital scrapbooking collection "Lilly's Christmas" Below. Scroll down further to see the full questionnaire..so funny. I hope to ask them the same things each year and see how much they change.

Breaking Down the Layout - Blending Video Tutorial 01

Blending Tutorial by Brandy Murry using Photoshop CS6

(steps can be used in Photoshop Elements)

Skill Level: Intermediate

Recently many of you filled out a survey for Scrap Girls and asked for more tutorials.. I just wanted you to know that we read your requests and I, along with the other Scrap Girls Designers hope to able to give you more in the future.

I have been asked by a few of you how I achieved the blending in this layout, so I thought I would “break it down for you” and give you some helpful tips to create the same look for yourselves.

Video for the following Tutorial

The first step was extracting this photo of Lilly. There are many ways to extract an image in Photoshop. For me, I usually use the lasso tool.

The lasso tool can be found on the left side of your screen in your “Tools Palette” It looks like a little rope lasso. If you hold down the left button of your mouse the window comes out, allowing you to choose from 3 different types of lassos. I used the basic lasso tool and drag it around the image while being very close up. (you may access your lasso a little different depending on your Photoshop Program)

You want to make sure your “Add to Selection Box” is checked. You can find this after you select the lasso tool. Look to the top of your screen. There are 4 choices, you want to choose the 2nd one (Add to Selection). This allows you to add to your selection as you go around the image. (See video for how to do this).

Once you get the image extracted you, right click while on your layer with the marching ants and choose “layer via copy”. Next delete the original image. Now we want to “Flatten the Image” into one layer. While on your Layers Palette (on the right side of your screen) right click anywhere in this palette and choose> Flatten Image. This will give you a white background (which you want).

Next we need to change the photo from a color image to a sepia toned image. Again...many ways to do this, but here is an easy tip anyone can use. Select any cream colored paper you have in your stash or add a solid cream color in a layer above the photo. I used my Naturally Neutral Paper for a solid cream (#7). Or you can use the tan paper in the Shabby Blanc Collection (if you are following this exactly).

Just change the blending mode of the paper or cream colored layer to “Color” as seen in the image above. Presto! A sepia photo.

Now we need to make this photo glow just a bit. To achieve this change your foreground color black and your background color to White (Default Colors)

We will use the Filter Gallery.…. So Goto the top of your screen and click on Filter>Filter Gallery>Distort>Diffuse Glow. I set mine to Glow Amount 2 & Clear Amount 20.

This is the result of the Diffuse Glow.

Now it is time to blend!

You want to choose a background that is light. I used the Shabby Blanc Newsprint Paper because it was mostly cream with a little bit of words showing though.

Place your sepia photo in a layer above the background paper & change the blending mode to “Darken”. I set the opacity to about 88%. Move your photo around until you get the placement that works best for you. The white disappears so there is no worry of seeing the hard edges.

You will notice that you can see the print coming through the image. I don't mind that so much, but for me, I don't like it directly on her face, so we need to fix that.

You do this by adding a blank layer under the Sepia Photo. Choose a soft edged brush or a grunge brush. For this layout I used the Dynamic Brush Set: BackgroundBlenders, but you can use the basic soft brush that comes with Photoshop.

On this layer use the brush in WHITE to brush over the face area or any area you want the pattern coming thorough to disappear.

Next you might have noticed a small duplicate of this image on the right hand side of the layout. I duplicated my sepia layer, moved it to the right and change the opacity of this layer to 32%.

The final step was to add my embellishments, journaling and title. See the bottom of this tutorial for all ingredients used in this layout with links to the products in the Scrap Girls Boutique. You can use these to duplicate the steps exactly as I have used them or try some variations of your own.

If you liked this tutorial and would like to know how I achieved a look in another layout, please let me know by commenting below and referencing the layout from my Scrap Girls Boutique , this blog or My Gallery. I read every post.
